Hello, Ian!
I think that´s exactly one of the main functions of the comments-tool: to widen our knowledge about the Meccano-World. There still are dozens of other questions waiting to be solved, and such a realy good homepage as NZMeccano´s, were so much members actively participate, is the right place for "Meccano-detective-duties" :-)
By the way, I admire your Shelvoke+Drewery Forklift. Having myself bought some Model Plans at Howard´s (include the former), I still haven´t had the guts to try one of them. It´s with the nickel-era instructions that I´m slowly learning to work with texted-instructions, myself being "rooted" in the post-1962 Meccano-era (exploded views).
Have a wonderful start in the week, take care and stay healthy,
Carlos |

Hi Carlos,
Glad to have been able to help solve the mystery. When I posted the comment I had not realised there was a space to include my name! So we both learn something new today. |

Back in Meccano's early days, the 5½" x 2½" Flanged Plate Part 52 had no end flanges. This would have made it easier to fit the 3½" x 2½" Flanged Plates Part 53 forming each side of the control box. |

Hi, Anonymous!
Thanks for the comment. I must confess, I don´t owe nickel parts, and so, I first tried the build with modern, replica flanged plates #52 and #53 (source: Meccanoshop). It didn´t work. Having read your comment, I grabbed out my old ´64 parts and, oh surprise, #53 fits inside of #52! Then I noticed that the replica parts are made of a higher gauge steel, and that #53 is a bit wider as it used to be (63,5mm instead of 62,8-63mm). This, of course also happens with the flat plate #53a.
So, here´s the lesson for me: to double ckeck and to avoid too hasty comments! Dear homepage visitors, I apologize for the error in the header. |

Maybe not with nickel parts, I just tried it with 1928 dark red/green parts and also 1937 blue/gold parts both types fit inside a 52 with ease. |
