1908-1925 Meccano 3 Model 11 Travelling swivel crane g.jpg
This was my first use of the obsolete #33 pawl. Honestly, I´m not happy with it, considering that it is too balanced in weight (no auto-blocking effect). But maybe I just used it wrongly; comments welcomed!

I wonder, does the model's crank operated steering hark back to the earliest days of motoring, when instead of a steering wheel, a 'tiller' was used? If so, these instructions must be older than I thought! As the pawl, (part 33 as it used to be) lacks an extra hole through which a rubber band or spring could be fitted, maybe tension could be maintained by looping a small rubber band completely around the pawl and then fastening it at one of the holes beneath. The bolt heads in the swivelling bush wheel as originally described, would not have been as damaging, as in those days, parts were in the more durable nickel-plated finish. Even so, it was a sub-optimal solution, and your idea is far better of course. |
